Everyone is aware of the extremely high cost of most health care services. These costs can be measured not only in cash outlays, but also in time spent at a doctor's office. Waiting times can often be an hour or more for a comprehensive physical examination at a family physician's or internist's office. If you have a problem that requires same-day attention, the waiting time at a local hospital emergency room is open-ended and can easily range into several hours or more.
Those fortunate enough to have health insurance are able to buffer some of the monetary expenses. But even with an individual or family health insurance policy, annual out-of-pocket costs continue to rise steeply as monthly premiums, co-payments, and deductibles increase substantially year-over-year. For example, during the past five years monthly premiums for many policies have increased 15% or more annually. This means that monthly payments in 2013 would be approximately double those paid in 2008. Twice the cost for the same coverage. That's a tough situation. Of course, the fees don't stop at the monthly premium. Many policies have deductibles in the range of $5000 or more.
Thus, if we want to enjoy good financial health as well as good physical health, we might consider getting a "personal" health insurance policy. Such a "policy" requires more effort than that involved in writing a check. Your personal health insurance policy involves taking action in the two main lifestyle areas of diet/nutrition and exercise. A third lifestyle area, often ignored, involves personal well-being. This area includes building increasingly positive family relationships and friendships and developing a broader set of interests beyond one's favorite television stations and websites.
It is now well-established that lifestyle matters greatly to one's long-term health and well-being.1,2 Numerous studies have shown that one in three Americans have one or more chronic diseases - diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The personal and family costs, the financial costs, and the costs to society of chronic disease are high. By establishing habits of good nutrition, regular vigorous exercise, and rewarding relationships and activities, we help prevent these major health problems.3 By engaging in healthy lifestyles, we are taking action that will reap many rewards for ourselves and our families down the years.
The only requirement to begin receiving the benefits of improved health is the willingness to get started. Even if you haven't done any regular exercise for many years, or if you can't remember the last time you ate a serving of broccoli, fennel, or kale, you can still start the journey to better health today. And if you begin, it's very possible that you'll look back after 12 months, 6 months, or even 3 months and be very glad you did.

Topic of the Week: Recovery Techniques for Athletes
Athletic activities place significant physical and metabolic demands on your body and affect your body’s energy levels and internal environment. Many athletes, both competitive and recreational alike, may benefit from sports recovery techniques. Athletes who participate in long events, who train twice daily, who engage in weight training, who compete regularly or who experience high levels of fatigue or tissue damage may benefit most from recovery techniques. How quickly you recover from a bout of exercise or an athletic event may have as much to do with the techniques you employ immediately afterwards as the duration of the event or the intensity at which you performed it.
Using effective recovery techniques is important for all athletes to reverse or minimize sources of fatigue and restore your body (and mind) back to pre-participation levels in the least possible amount of time. Recovery techniques, when used consistently and appropriately, may reduce fatigue, improve the frequency and quality of your training and elevate your gameday performance, notes the Australian Sports Commission. Your chiropractor understands the unique demands of your sport and is an important resource in helping you establish your recovery routine. Your chiropractor can also use a number of manual medicine techniques to support your musculoskeletal health before and after your athletic event or competition.
Stretching & Active Recovery
Stretching and active recovery (i.e., a warm-down) are commonly used recovery techniques. Gentle, static stretching for 10 seconds or more per stretch may help relax tight muscles, improve range of motion and reduce the likelihood of injury. The principle purpose behind this recovery technique is to reduce muscle tightness, not improve flexibility. Active recovery (i.e., light physical activity) has long been used to help dissipate excess heat post-exercise and enhance the removal of blood lactate, among other reasons.
According to a 2000 study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, active recovery (exercise at 50 percent maximal oxygen uptake) was better than both rest or massage for removing blood lactate following maximal effort cycling tests in 18 trained male cyclists.
Nutrition & Hydration
Getting the proper nutrients and staying hydrated are two key recovery techniques used by athletes. A 2008 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition notes that athlete recovery following a cycling time trial was improved by consuming a liquid carbohydrateprotein supplement early in the recovery process (and produced greater recovery benefits than a carbohydrateonly drink containing an equal amount of energy or calories). The researchers also report that this liquid carbohydrate-protein supplement improved fat oxidation (the use of stored fats to produce energy) and subsequent same day exercise efforts in their study participants. Staying hydrated during physical activity is one of the best ways to ensure optimal athletic performance and restoration of water and electrolyte balance, states a 2004 study published in the journal Science & Sports, is a crucial part of the recovery process of any physical activity that results in sweat loss.
Rest & Relaxation
Rest and relaxation are among the simplest - and possibly most effective – recovery techniques for athletes. Good quality sleep may be the No. 1 recovery tool for athletes, as it helps regenerate damaged tissues, abolishes lingering fatigue and provides a mental break from competition. According to a 2009 study published in the journal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, there is a growing body of scientific evidence confirming a link between sleep, cognitive processes, and metabolic function, as it relates to post-exercise recovery and athletic performance. The National Sleep Foundation states that getting a good night’s sleep is essential for peak athletic performance, regardless of activity and that less sleep may increase the likelihood of fatigue, low energy, poor focus and slow post-game recovery.
Other Recovery Techniques
Other sports recovery techniques include hydrotherapy, compression garments, massage and other types of bodywork. Ask your chiropractor about what recovery techniques are best for you and your athletic activity.

Topic of the Week: Spine Care Strategies at Work
Work tasks, especially tasks of a repetitive nature, can place significant demands on your spine and the soft tissues that support it. Over time, work tasks - everything from sitting to lifting to bending - can cause body structures and tissues to break down, leading to injury. The goal of spine care strategies at work is to alter your work environment to minimize the effects of repetitive tasks while training your body to stand up to the challenges of your work demands. It is important to use your body, to move your limbs and joints through their full ranges of motion but some work tasks present physical challenges that may overwhelm your body’s threshold for injury.
Chiropractors can offer employers a unique perspective on work demands and their effects on their employees. A study published in the journal Australasian Chiropractic & Osteopathy states that even one spinal care lecture delivered by a chiropractor in the workplace can reduce spine-related pain among workers and the cost of back injuries. Your chiropractor understands workplace injuries and is the perfect person to share specific spine care strategies with you to address your unique work tasks. We discuss several general work-related spine care strategies in this issue of the Wellness Express.
Strategy #1: Build Physical Activity into Your Routine
Carrying too much weight increases stress on your spine and may contribute to workplace injuries. According to a 2003 study published in the journal Spine, obesity is a key independent predictor of back pain and its severity. Another study, published in 2003 in the journal Obesity Research, notes that increased levels of Body Mass Index (BMI) correspond with increased levels of back, hip, and knee pain in adults over 60. Performing a sufficient amount of moderate aerobic exercise each week (approximately 150 minutes per week) and twice-weekly strength training sessions may help you lose excess weight and bolster your core strength - both of which can help you avoid common workplace spine injuries.
Strategy #2: Pay Attention to Your Posture
Paying attention to your posture may be one of the most effective ways to care for your spine while at work, especially if you sit or stand for long periods. A 2001 study published in the journal Clinical Biomechanics reports that spinal stability is affected by posture and that the control of spinal stability is decreased when asymmetric, or unbalanced postures are assumed for prolonged periods. If you stand at work for long periods, consider resting one foot on a stool for a short time to reduce the stress and strain on your spinal tissues. Holding reading material at eye level can reduce stress on your cervical spine and help improve your posture. Simple suggestions for maintaining healthy sitting posture include using a chair that allows you to keep your feet flat on and thighs parallel to the floor and removing any objects (cell phone, wallet) from your back pocket to reduce pressure on your low back. Ask your chiropractor about effective postural exercises you can perform while standing or sitting at work.
Strategy #3: Minimize Workplace Hazards
Falls, lifting injuries, inappropriate footwear and poor workstation design are all possible hazards in the workplace that can be minimized by taking action. To help prevent falls – a common cause of serious back injury among workers - remove objects from your work space that could cause you to trip and ask your employer to make sure slippery surfaces are clearly marked or have carpet or other non-slip surfaces installed. Lift heavy objects with your knees and engage your core muscles for this task. Keep the object close to the center of your body to reduce the stress on your spine and other tissues or ask a co worker for help in moving heavy objects. Wearing non-slip shoes without any heel elevation is another effective way to minimize workplace hazards.
Strategy #4: Modify Workplace Tasks
Modifying workplace tasks is the key to long-term spine injury prevention. It is important to find ways to perform your work activities that place less strain on your vulnerable tissues and prevent repetitive strain injuries. An ergonomics professional can perform an assessment of your workstation to help you do just this but there are many simple things you can do right now to modify your workplace tasks. Consider using lifting devices or adjustable equipment to manage packages or loads. Using adjustable chairs and desks can help reduce back and neck strain and can ensure that you are in an optimal position in front of your computer screen or monitor. Using a phone headset can significantly reduce neck strain, tension and muscle imbalances that cause problems over time. Ask your chiropractor about other strategies to preserve your spine health while at work.

Exercise Smarter Not Harder

We all want to get the most out of the time we spend exercising, and it's natural to think that exercising harder is going to provide a bigger, faster payoff. But exercising harder without adequate preparation often leads to injury. Then there's recovery time, possibly the need for rehabilitation, and ultimately you're back at the beginning in terms of fitness, strength, and endurance. Injuries are to be avoided, if at all possible. The best way to avoid injury is to exercise smarter. Exercising smarter is also the best way to achieve continual, progressive gains in fitness, health, and well-being.
Exercising smarter means doing what you're capable of doing, and then doing a little bit more. For example, if you're a runner and typically run three miles a day, three times a week, it wouldn't be smart to do an eight-mile run the next time you go out. The likely outcome would be a strained muscle, shin splints, or worse. If you lift weights and typically bench press 100 pounds, it wouldn't be smart to find out what it feels like to bench press 150 pounds. What it could feel like is a back, neck, or shoulder injury. In either scenario, the price paid for attempting to train "harder" is at least two weeks of down time, possibly much longer, while you recover from your injury. Of course, we've all made mistakes and sometimes training injuries just happen, but tempting fate by doing too much is not, in fact, "smart."
The goal with any type of exercise is to progress gradually over time.1 For example, if you're 60 years old and haven't exercised for many years, a walking program is a good way to begin. On your first day, walk at a comfortable, steady pace for 10 minutes. That may not feel like much, but you will be increasing your total time over the next four to six weeks. The next day, add a couple of minutes. As long as you're continuing to feel good, add a couple of minutes on every second day or so, building up consistently to a total of 30 minutes per day. At this point, you're walking 30 minutes per day, five times per week. Next, every second day or so, increase your pace by a bit.
Don't increase your pace if you feel uncomfortable or feel as if you're working too hard. Be in tune with what you're doing. After four to six weeks of gradually increasing your pace, you'll probably be able to walk 30 minutes per day, five days a week, at a nice brisk pace.2 You may also notice that you've lost some weight,3 you feel more flexible, you're standing more upright, your skin has a nice, healthy glow, and you're sleeping more soundly and more restfully.
Use the same gradual approach with strength training. Start with lighter weights, not heavier weights, than you think you can use. With lighter weights, you can build up your strength over time. With weights that are too heavy, there's always the danger of incurring an injury that will set you back and interfere with your training. Exercising smarter leads to consistent gains in strength, muscle mass, ability to do physical work, and overall health.
It's natural to want to exercise harder. But exercising smarter is the way to go for long-term benefit without the danger of time-wasting injuries. Exercising smarter is the effective way to maximize the value of our investment in physical fitness.

Topic of the Week: Children & Sports
Introduction
Most of us were introduced to sports and physical activity at an early age, and the relationship we formed with those activities helped shape our understanding of health, fitness and quality of life. Encouraging your child to participate in sports or physical activities (either organized or informal) can have a significant and long-lasting effect on his or her physical, mental and social health. According to a 2003 study published in the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, parental support and influence are two key variables that can either optimize a child’s experience of extracurricular activities or contribute to a negative experience. In this edition of the Wellness Express we discuss the role of sports for children and how you can help your child find the activities that are best suited for him or her.
The Benefits of Sports for Children
Sports participation can yield significant health benefits for children. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that physical activity in children helps boost cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength, decreases body fatness, improves metabolic disease risk profiles, bolsters bone health and helps decrease depression and anxiety symptoms. The possible benefits of sports participation in children goes beyond physical health to include improved mental health, as long as the sports environment surrounding your child is positive and encouraging. Your child’s participation in sports and physical activity can elevate his or her self confidence and help your child realize significant psychological benefits through continued sports participation in adolescence and adulthood.
Improved social health is another possible benefit of sports participation for children. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, sports can help children expand their social network, have fun, learn team values and boost self esteem. Sports participation may also teach children about the importance of fair play, how to control their impulses and how to manage success and disappointment. Sports that bring boys and girls together in active play may be particularly beneficial in cultivating social health and they can teach girls that they are capable of excelling in physical activity while teaching boys to be welcoming, inclusive, and supportive.
Children & Organized Sports
Organized sports are one avenue for physical activity available to children. Some children participate in organized sports to improve their skills and hone their athletic prowess, while others participate simply to be part of a team. Organized sports present an opportunity for increased physical activity and a more appropriate matching of competitors and they can help reduce your child’s risk of developing common adult health problems, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. If played for the wrong reasons, however, organized sports can be humiliating for some children and have lasting effects on a child’s self-esteem.
Dr. John Douillard, a chiropractor and author of Body, Mind and Sport, notes that almost 50 percent of Americans experience their first major failure in life as a sports failure and he suggest that the motivation for sports participation needs to shift from being goaloriented to being process-oriented. This means that a greater emphasis should be placed on how the sport is played and experienced by children, instead of what children accomplish on the playing field. Emphasizing how the sport is played and the acquisition of skills, rather than winning at all costs, is a constructive way to help your child experience joy and success in sports and keep them interested in sports and physical activity.
Aptitudes & Activity Selection
The health benefits of sports are best realized when the circumstances of participation match your child’s interests and aptitudes. If your child is playing a sport or performing a physical activity that celebrates his or her talents and abilities, he or she will be more likely to experience a greater quality of life, personal growth, and success (in whatever way he or she defines it). Helping your child find the physical activities that are most appropriate for him or her involves understanding his or her interests as well as his or her body type and physical constitution (and how these factors affect athletic ability and the enjoyment of certain sports). In his book, Douillard discusses how a person’s physical constitution or makeup can predispose that individual to optimal functioning in certain activities.
Your chiropractor is an important part of your child’s healthcare team and can keep your child healthy and active through regular checkups. Your chiropractor can also provide advice on activities that are most beneficial for your child’s spine and general health.

The Milk Myth: What Your Body Really Needs
A recent study claims that young adults are not drinking enough milk -- at least according to press reports on the matter. But according to the study’s lead author Nicole Larson, the focus on the study was on calcium.
The words "milk" and "calcium" are often used interchangeably in the popular press. But while milk is a calcium source, no standard other than that of the National Dairy Council considers it the best calcium source.
The suggestion that you need to drink three glasses of the secretion of a cow's mammary glands in order to be healthy is a bit outrageous and doesn't fit the human evolutionary profile. In fact, most humans around the world cannot easily digest cow milk.
Yogurt has more calcium than milk and is easier to digest. Collards and other greens also have about as much or more calcium than milk by the cup. Greens, unlike milk, have the added benefit of vitamin K, also necessary for strong bones. Sesame is also very high in calcium.
When you measure calcium by cup of food product, milk is high on the list. When you view it by calorie, though, milk is at the bottom. A hundred calories of turnip greens have over three times as much calcium as 100 calories of whole milk.
Dr. Mercola's Comments:
The idea that you have to drink milk for strong bones is deeply ingrained – the result of very successful PR by the commercial dairy industry. But what most people do not realize is that pasteurized milk has little to do with strong bones, or good health, for that matter.
In fact, pasteurized milk has no important health benefits at all, and I do not recommend it to anyone.
As stated in the article above, calcium is the issue being investigated, not necessarily the consumption of (pasteurized) milk. The study in question found that during the transition to young adulthood, the daily intake of calcium decreased an average of 153 mg for high school girls, and 194 mg for boys.

There’s a common concern that eating a high protein diet will secrete calcium into your urine. But the truth of the matter is that more people are now eating low-protein diets, and your body needs protein, because amino acids are part of the bone matrix.
If you don’t consume enough of specific amino acids your body can’t form strong, dense bones. So you DO want to make sure you eat plenty of high quality protein like free-range eggs and grass-fed meats.
Additional Components Vital for Bone Density
Healthy fats -- Along with your basic food selections, your omega 3 intake and the ratio between omega 3 to omega 6 has a lot to do with building healthy bone. Unfortunately, even many nutritionists are unaware of the important relationship between healthy bones and optimal fat intake.
Most everyone needs to take a high quality, animal-based omega 3 fat as it is very deficient in most people’s diet. I recommend krill oil, as I believe it’s a superior source of omega 3’s.
And, to further balance out your omega 3 and omega 6 ratio, you’ll want to reduce the amount of processed vegetable oils you consume. Oils like corn oil, safflower- and soy oil are loaded with omega 6’s. I also recommend avoiding canola oil for other reasons.
Sunshine -- Vitamin D is also important for calcium absorption, so along with your raw milk and vegetables, make sure that you are getting plenty of safe sun exposure this summer. Getting your levels up to about 60 ng/ml will help you optimize your bone density.
Exercise -- You should also remember that, just as exercise and diet work in tandem to beat obesity, the same can be said for osteoporosis. Strengthening bone mass through weight-bearing exercise, especially during puberty, can build a good foundation that can last a lifetime. In fact, there is a stronger connection between exercise and improved bone density among teens than taking calcium!
This is because bone-building is a dynamic process, and by exerting force on your bones through exercise such as strength training, you stimulate new, healthy bone growth.

When you measure calcium by cup of food product, milk is high on the list. When you view it by calorie, though, milk is at the bottom. A hundred calories of turnip greens have over three times as much calcium as 100 calories of whole milk.

Manual medicine techniques, including spinal manipulation, have been practiced for centuries in certain parts of the world, but the profession of chiropractic as we know it today began in the United States in the 1890s. Chiropractic developed as a standalone profession during those early years and earned legal recognition and broader acceptance during the 1960s and 1970s. Chiropractic services are now largely integrated with mainstream healthcare services in many countries. According to the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), the practice of chiropractic is now recognized and regulated in about 40 countries around the world. As chiropractic research, education and licensing standards continue to improve, chiropractic will reach more people in more places with its message of natural health and healing.
Chiropractic in Canada & the USA
The WFC notes that there are approximately 8,000 chiropractors in Canada and 65,000 chiropractors in the United States. In Canada and the United States, chiropractors are considered primary care providers and musculoskeletal health experts and chiropractic is a highly regulated profession. Chiropractic is now one of the largest healthcare professions in North America and a 2005 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports that doctors of chiropractic are well integrated into the healthcare systems of Canada and the United States. According to the WFC, chiropractic services in the United States are now available in the military and veterans’ administration hospitals and health care systems. The U.S. Department of Labor notes that employment of chiropractors is expected to jump by 28 percent between 2010 and 2020 as an increasing number of people become interested in natural, non-surgical treatment approaches.
Canadian and American chiropractors diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments and have the authority to order lab and imaging studies, if required. The scope of practice among chiropractors in these two countries varies from state to state and province to province. Most jurisdictions, however, allow chiropractors the right to use common diagnostic methods, refer patients to appropriate specialists and co-manage a patient’s health with another healthcare provider. Many chiropractors in Canada and the United States can offer the following therapies in addition to spinal manipulation: soft tissue work, rehabilitative exercises, physical therapy modalities and nutritional and lifestyle counseling. With additional training, chiropractors in some U.S. states can practice obstetrical and minor surgical procedures, and one state (New Mexico) allows “advanced practice” trained chiropractors to prescribe certain medications.

A 2001 article published in Dynamic Chiropractic, however, notes that chiropractic in Europe is not a unified profession and that each European country has chosen its own chiropractic path. There is no common legislation for the chiropractic profession in Europe; some countries (e.g., Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Belgium) regulate chiropractic under common law, while in other countries (e.g., Italy), chiropractic is regulated through local regulations and courtmandated guidelines, according to the article.
The American Chiropractic Association (using statistics from the WFC) states that the United Kingdom has approximately 2,000 chiropractors. The British Chiropractic Association - the largest and longest-standing chiropractic association in the UK - reports that members of their association provide to patients a “package of care” that, along with conventional chiropractic adjustments, includes lifestyle counseling, exercise advice and, in some cases, medical acupuncture or dry needling. The Life You Want to Live
We all want to get the most we can out of life. Whether we want to find a loving partner, work at a meaningful career, gather an abundance of financial resources, or have enough leisure time to pursue favored interests, the usual bottom line is that we want to be happy. Throughout thousands of years of history, the great philosophers have pointed to happiness as the worthwhile goal of all human activities. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle (384 B.C. - 322 B.C.) suggested that eudaimonia - happiness - is our best good. Most of us would agree that the life we want to live involves achieving the greatest degree of happiness. Even if we haven't spent much time studying the works of Aristotle, we intuitively seek our greatest happiness. But such joy often escapes us, even at times when we think to ourselves that we ought to be happy. Various obstacles stand in our way, not the least of which is physical pain.
Many people experiencing chronic pain may find it difficult to imagine really living the life they want to live. Pain seems to influence everything. But there are many tools and techniques for diminishing the impact of chronic pain. The practice of yoga1,2 has consistently been shown to provide benefits, as has developing the habit of doing regular exercise3, such as walking or swimming. Engaging in enriching activities such as learning a new language, studying a musical instrument, and learning how to draw or paint with watercolors can shift one's focus away from pain and toward personal growth and development.

The retention or loss of qi is thought to affect the health, prosperity, energy levels and other life aspects of the occupants of a particular space. The orientation and attributes of elements in your home or office may affect the flow of qi by slowing it down, speeding it up or redirecting it, all of which may have an influence on your experience of life.

Feng shui, though often considered a mystical practice, is not associated with any religion or belief system. According to the American Feng shui Institute, Feng shui is a scientific discipline concerned with the analysis of energy and it involves the study of geography, ecology, urban planning, and architecture. Removing obstacles that obstruct the smooth flow of energy, incorporating curves into your home or office’s design, clearing energy-draining clutter, positioning plants, artwork, mirrors, and furniture appropriately and removing broken, damaged or unused objects from your environment are all key principles of Feng shui. Other Feng shui considerations include the orientation of your home (what direction it faces, its location on the street, its position on the lot), the colors you use in your home or office, how you enter your home and the placement of wind chimes.
Feng shui For Health
One of the fundamental ideas of Feng shui - and Chinese Medicine, for that matter - is that balanced and freeflowing chi leads to lasting health, while stagnant or imbalanced qi invites disease. Few conventional research studies have been performed to assess the true health benefits of Feng shui, though one study published in 2001 in the journal Health and Social Work examined the effects of hoarding (i.e., accumulating clutter) on the health of elderly individuals. The researchers found that extensive clutter was associated with significant impairment, interference with basic hygiene and increased risk of physical injury in elderly hoarders. Another study, published in 2005 in the journal Behavior Research and Therapy, notes that hoarders suffer more frequent traumatic experiences, a greater number of different types of trauma, more symptoms of inattention and more hyperactivity than nonhoarders.
The true test is in how an environment makes you feel. Does it contribute to lower stress levels? Does it make you feel relaxed? Does it help reduce your anxiety? An environment designed using Feng shui principles is soothing, makes you feel comfortable and protected, and invites good health into your home.
Feng shui For Prosperity
Feng shui has been practiced for hundreds of years in Asia to create environments that enable success in life, including financial success. It’s believed that many of the same Feng shui principles that encourage health also promote wealth and prosperity, though other Feng shui principles are wealth-specific, including keeping your wallet organized and free of clutter, displaying personal wealth symbols that reflect your own taste and culture, displaying images of flowing water, and creating collages that depict the objects and lifestyle that greater wealth could help you attain.
The effects of Feng shui on property value have been studied to some small degree. In one contemporary study published in the Journal of Urban Planning and Development, researchers found a high correlation between Feng shui practices and housing prices. Another study, published in 2008 in the International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis, notes that Feng shui practices may positively affect property prices in the West.
Feng shui and Chiropractic
According to a 2005 study published in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, Feng shui is a type of complementary and alternative (CAM) treatment - the same type of treatment with which chiropractic has most closely aligned throughout its history. Feng shui and traditional chiropractic share several key commonalities, especially the belief in a life force (aka vital force or life energy) that helps govern health and wellbeing. Topic of the Week: Common Chiropractic Myths Debunked
Introduction
The chiropractic profession has changed and evolved considerably since it was first created by D. D. Palmer in 1895, though its principle goal - improving general health through natural, gentle and noninvasive means - has always remained the same. Certain myths about chiropractic care have arisen over the years and remained in public consciousness, though chiropractors are now successfully addressing these myths or misconceptions by providing the most accurate information about the profession and its healing potential. In this edition of the Wellness Express, we will review - and debunk! - some of the most common myths about chiropractic care.
Myth #1: Chiropractic Adjustments are Painful
Chiropractic adjustments, in most cases, are completely painless and many patients experience some degree of relief immediately following an adjustment. According to the Mayo Clinic, chiropractic adjustments may be effective in treating low back pain, headaches and other spine related conditions, though some people may experience minor side effects for a few days after receiving treatment.
Because the adjustment may move joint structures that haven’t moved properly in some time, after the adjustment, it is also common to feel a mild soreness in the area that has been treated - a feeling similar to that of engaging in strenuous activity after a long period of little or no physical activity. On rare occasions, chiropractic adjustments may cause a mild headache or fatigue, but these symptoms usually fade as relief sets in.
Myth #2: Chiropractic is Unscientific
Chiropractic research has advanced steadily over the past decade and there are now many published studies that indicate the effectiveness of chiropractic care as a therapeutic modality (in addition to the wealth of clinical evidence over the decades from patients who have experienced relief with chiropractic care). One such study, a 2012 paper published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, states that patients with neck pain who received regular chiropractic care for 12 weeks experienced a 75 percent reduction in pain after 12 weeks (compared to 38 percent pain reduction in those taking pain medication only).
Another study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 2000, notes that patients with chronic low back pain who were treated by chiropractors experienced more improvement and than patients treated by family physicians. Countless research studies have long since debunked the myth that chiropractic is unscientific.
Myth #3: Chiropractors Work on the Spine Only
Back pain is the health problem most commonly treated by chiropractors, but chiropractors are musculoskeletal health experts who treat many body parts and systems. The scope of practice for chiropractors varies from one jurisdiction to another, but most chiropractors treat a wide variety of health problems with an eclectic blend of techniques. According to a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, over 90 percent of licensing boards who responded to a survey allowed chiropractors to use some form of physical therapy, treat soft tissue and tissue and extremity problems, prescribe nutritional supplements and conduct impairment ratings. Over 80 percent of responding licensing boards indicated that chiropractors in their region can perform X-ray procedures and order CT or MRI studies to help reach a diagnosis. Chiropractors have historically treated the following conditions or problems using conservative techniques: Headaches, ear infections, colic, foot and ankle pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, gastroesophageal reflux, and high blood pressure.
Myth #4: Chiropractic Care is Expensive
A common myth or misconception about chiropractic care is that it is cost-prohibitive. Research has consistently shown that chiropractic care is a cost-effective therapy. The Manga Report – a study commissioned by the Canadian government in 1993 – states that chiropractic management of low back pain is more cost-effective than medical management. Another study, published in 2005 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, reports that manipulation based therapy for low back pain is a cost-effective alternative for this health problem. One round of chiropractic care is often enough to resolve many musculoskeletal problems, though some patients – especially those with longstanding problems - may require additional treatment to realize lasting health benefits.
Myth #5: Chiropractic Care is Not Mainstream
Chiropractic care is one of the largest healing professions in the world and has become a mainstream care option for people in the United States, Canada and elsewhere. Though profound philosophical differences may exist between them, medical doctors and chiropractors now often work closely with one other in their patients’ best interests and many medical doctors refer patients to chiropractors for spine care and other services. Because of their historical position as alternative care providers, chiropractors are also well-positioned to work closely with naturopathic physicians, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and other members of your healthcare team.

Topic of the Week: Top Heart Health Supplements
Introduction
Achieving and maintaining excellent heart health has never been more important. According to Harvard Health Publications, approximately 65 million people in the United States have high blood pressure, 7 million people have had a heart attack and 11 million people are currently suffering from some other type of cardiovascular disease that affects their circulatory system and quality of life. Cardiovascular disease is a major health problem in many countries around the world. Lifestyle factors play an important role in preventing heart and circulatory problems and a well-rounded approach to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease involves good nutrition, consistent and appropriate exercise and weight control. Certain dietary supplements may also play an influential role in preserving your heart and blood vessel health. Your chiropractor can counsel you on the most effective supplements for your specific needs and he or she may recommend some of the following supplements.
Fish Oil
Fish oil can be obtained from eating fish - tuna, salmon, mackerel, sturgeon and sardines, among others - as well as dietary supplements. Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and it has been used, in supplement form, to treat a wide variety of conditions, including conditions of the heart and blood vessels. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, fish oil may be helpful in reducing blood pressure and triglyceride levels and preventing heart disease or stroke. A 2000 article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reaches similar conclusions, stating that fish oil (and omega-3 fatty acids in particular) favorably affect atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, inflammatory disease and even certain behavioral conditions.
Garlic
Garlic, which is rich in antioxidants, has been used as both food and medicine by many cultures for thousands of years. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research evidence suggests that garlic may slow the progression of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, and decrease blood pressure by 7 to 8 percent. Garlic also appears to possess anticoagulant, or blood thinning, properties, which means that it may help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a vitamin-like substance found within your body, especially in your heart, liver, pancreas and kidneys. CoQ10 can be obtained from certain dietary sources - meats, seafood - or in supplement form. This supplement is commonly used in treating congestive heart failure, chest pain, elevated blood pressure and heart problems associated with certain cancer drugs. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure states that CoQ10 does indeed improve systolic function, or the heart’s pumping ability, in people who have chronic heart failure.
Resveratrol
Red wine contains antioxidants called polyphenols and one polyphenol in particular, resveratrol, may help prevent blood vessel damage and reduce the likelihood of blood clots, notes the Mayo Clinic.6 According to a 2009 study published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology resveratrol helps reduce the number of deaths associated with cardiovascular complications, favorably alters the progression of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease and even increases life span by activating longevity genes. Resveratrol can be obtained from red wine or certain dietary supplements.
Green Tea Extracts
Green tea has long been used for medicinal purposes, including to improve heart and blood vessel health. Green tea, which contains powerful antioxidants called polyphenols, prevents inflammation in your body’s tissues, which helps keep your blood vessels flexible and relaxed. Flexible and relaxed blood vessels are better able to handle constant fluctuations in blood pressure. According to a 2004 study published in the journal Heart, green tea consumption can reverse endothelial dysfunction – dysfunction of the inner lining of blood vessels – in seemingly healthy smokers, most likely through its strong antioxidant effect. The antioxidant properties of green tea - and green tea extracts, herbal derivatives from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant - may help prevent atherosclerosis, particularly coronary artery disease.

These facts are strongly associated with ongoing epidemics in diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Diabetes may cause loss of vision, kidney problems, and loss of circulation in the legs and feet. Cardiovascular disease includes high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attacks. Being overweight or obese may cause diseases which require lifelong treatment. Personal action is needed to begin to restore good health, but it's important to understand the specific nature of the actions to take.
What is not required is a drastic reduction of body weight to some idealized norm of "thinness." It is not appropriate for people to attempt to force themselves to look like runway models. What does work is applying simple techniques and strategies to encourage a gradual loss of weight. Over time persons on such a plan will achieve a body weight that is normal for them. There are two key steps to reaching your normal weight.
The first step is to reduce your overall intake of calories by eating six small meals a day. If five small meals works best for your schedule and daily needs, that’s fine. The main point involves total calories. With six small meals, each one is about 300 calories - a little less for women and a little more for men who are taller and more heavily muscled. For men the daily calorie intake is between 1800 and 2100 calories. For women, the daily calorie intake is between 1700 and 1800 calories. By experimenting a bit, you’ll find your optimal calorie level that results in consistent weight loss. Make sure to combine complex carbohydrates and protein at each small meal. The numerous benefits of food combining include maintaining insulin levels in a normal range and improved cognitive/mental function.
For many people, this reduction in daily calories will have an immediate and dramatic impact. There may be real hunger pangs, and it will be important to remember that the next small meal is only a couple of hours away. The pounds you lose in the first couple of weeks will likely provide plenty of reinforcement to help you through the times when you are really hungry.
The next and simultaneous step is to begin a program of regular, vigorous exercise. Of course, if you haven't exercised in a long time you'll need to start slowly. Your goal is to build up to 30 minutes of vigorous exercise five times per week.3 Ideally you'll be doing both cardiovascular exercise and strength training, and in the process you'll build lean muscle mass. The result is an elevation in your basal metabolic rate which causes your body to burn fat even while you're resting!
As you follow these two health-promoting programs, you will notice that you're steadily and gradually losing weight. There will come a time, anywhere from 6 months to a year after you've begun your new lifestyle, when your weight loss will stop. For example, you'll notice you only lost half a pound over the previous week or two. Then you'll know that you've reached your "ideal" body weight. You've reached the weight that is normal for you. It is very likely that your new body mass index (a ratio between your height and weight) is now in the normal range or very close to the high end of normal. You've taken control of your health and your life, and the very good news is that you've built new habits that will last a lifetime.

Exercise of the Week: Reverse Crunch with Exercise Ball plus Oblique Twist
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Start: Lie on back with hands behind head, elbows out. Position ball behind legs so it can be lifted off floor with hamstrings/adductors.
Exercise: Lift ball just off floor. Pull stomach inward while inhaling. As you exhale, simultaneously bring knees up toward chest and try to touch right elbow to left knee. Pause, then return to starting position. Switch sides. Repeat 10 times.
Topic of the Week: The Restorative Effects of Saunas Introduction
A sauna is a wood-lined room or small house designed for heat sessions. Sauna heat sessions can involve dry or wet heat and are intended to promote health in several important ways, such as relieving stress, reducing muscle and joint achiness and enhancing cardiovascular function. Saunas are particularly popular in Finland and Estonia, though many cultures around the world engage in some form of sweat bath for health benefits.
Saunas - which can reach temperatures of 185 degrees F or 85 degrees C, or more, cause profound physiological effects. According to Harvard Health Publications, saunas can cause a rapid increase in your skin temperature, boost your heart rate by 30 percent or more and cause you to shed a pint of sweat during even short sessions. Your chiropractor may prescribe sauna therapy to help augment your in-office treatments. You should always talk with your chiropractor before using sauna therapy for health purposes, as this therapy may not be appropriate for everyone.
Conventional vs. Infrared
The two basic sauna styles are conventional and infrared. Conventional saunas warm the air, while infrared saunas warm objects. You can use a conventional sauna to create a high heat, low humidity environment and generate temperatures in the range of 185 to 195 degrees F (80 to 90 degrees C). In a conventional sauna, you splash water over heated stones and this water is vaporized to create a dry heat that has soothing effects. Infrared saunas produce infrared radiant heat, which creates a milder environment and warming effect. Infrared radiant heat is absorbed by the surface of your skin and heats your body directly.
Relaxation & Feelings of Well-Being
Saunas are best known - and most commonly used - for aiding relaxation and creating feelings of well being. Many people use the sauna to help reduce stress levels. The sauna’s heat helps relax your body, including tight muscles and the sauna is a place to unwind and find relief from stress in other aspects of your life. Improved blood flow and oxygen supply relaxes both your body and your mind, leading to feelings of well-being and a sense of rejuvenation. An article published in the journal Physiology states that the principle reason for sauna’s continuing popularity is its ability to evoke pleasant feelings of deep relaxation.
Cardiovascular Health Benefits
The health-positive effects of saunas may extend well beyond relaxation and feelings of well being. A 2009 studied published in the journal Canadian Family Physician states that there is at least some evidence that far-infrared saunas may help normalize blood pressure and treat congestive heart failure. Another study published in 2001 in the American Journal of Medicine notes that sauna bathing is safe for most people with coronary heart disease with stable angina pectoris or old myocardial infarction or heart attack. This study also notes that sauna therapy may not be appropriate for individuals who have unstable angina pectoris or severe aortic stenosis or narrowing of the aortic artery. Individuals who have experienced a recent myocardia infarction should also avoid sauna therapy.
Addtional Health Benefits
Additional health benefits of sauna therapy may include the soothing of joint aches and pains, the cleansing of skin and flushing of toxins from the body and the promotion of deeper sleep. According to a 2011 review article published in the Alternative Medicine Review: A Journal of Clinical Therapeutics, people who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic fatigue, chronic pain or addictions may also benefit from sauna therapy and that existing evidence supports the use of saunas for environmentally-induced illness.
Considerations
Talk with your chiropractor before using sauna therapy for health purposes, especially if you are pregnant. Your chiropractor understands your unique health history and can assess your readiness for this treatment approach. Some good general rules sauna users should employ include avoiding alcohol and medications that may limit sweating, staying in the sauna for no more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time, drinking two to four glasses of water after each sauna session and avoiding sauna therapy if feeling ill.

Proprioception - Making Your Body Smarter
We usually don't think of our bodies in terms of their being "smart." For example, we walk to the corner store without giving a single thought to the complex mechanics involved in getting there and back. But behind the scenes there's plenty going on and your body's "IQ" has a lot to do with your success in accomplishing everyday tasks.
Proprioception is one of those background physical processes that make up your body's total IQ. Proprioceptors are specialized nerve endings located in your muscles and joints that inform your brain about your body's position in three-dimensional space. You're able to write legibly because proprioceptors are sending instantaneous data about the angles of the small joints of your fingers and wrists as your pen moves across the page. You're able to run on the beach because proprioceptors are continuously sending signals to your brain about the changing shape of the uneven surface of the sand.1
Without these specialized nerve endings, we'd never be able to hit a baseball, throw a Frisbee, or drive a car. But proprioceptors can be smart or less than that. It all depends on how well-trained they are. One person out for a stroll might trip over a crack in the pavement and suffer a badly sprained ankle. Another person might trip over the same crack, even badly turning over their ankle in the process, and keep on walking without even a trace of a limp.
The difference between injury and non-injury is the level of proprioceptor training, and this level usually is related to whether you're doing regular exercise.2 Exercise trains your muscles and joints to adapt to varying kinds of stresses (weight-bearing loads) throughout a variety of positions (the full range of motion of those joints). As a result, trained proprioceptors can withstand a high degree of stress (such as a sudden twisting of an ankle). The untrained ankle, possibly the ankle of a person who hasn't done much walking, running, or bike riding in the last 5 years, will be damaged by an unusual and unexpected stress. The result is an ankle sprain of varying severity and possibly a broken ankle.
Similarly, it is well known that older adults experience more frequent falls than do younger adults. Part of the explanation involves proprioception.3 Many older adults don't engage in regular exercise. Proprioceptive function decreases, changes in level or surface aren't recognized quickly by the person's feet and ankles, and the person falls.
It's easy to see that the effort to maintain your body's IQ is time very well spent. The fastest way to boost this skill set is by doing regular exercise. All kinds of exercise provide benefit, so the best exercises are the ones that have some interest for you personally. Optimally, a person is doing both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. As always, the key to long-term health and wellness is consistency.
